When you purchase Chinese ATV's, you must realize that they are all the same in alot of ways.It doesn't matter what the brand name chinese ATV is. I can buy a shipping container full of a perticular type of ATV from China. I can put whatever name I want on it as a brand. Some ATV's are all ready are wholesaled with a name on them. But thats because a person out there purchased 10K units and said call them,Coolster,Roketa,Sunl,Tao tao and there are alot of names. But if I wanted to name a batch I purchased whole sale they would name them anything I wanted. Now there are several types I have seen, 3 of which I will make reference to as an example. There are units made that have verticle engines with 4 speed with reverse and there are 5 speeds. I find these CG engines and gear boxes are bomber and hold up really well. These are engines that were used in early model machines from the 80's for instance that the Chinese built for Honda, Yamaha,Suzuki, ect, that Lifan motor company produced and have bought the patent from the Japanese. So when they say that Chinese ATV's have clone engines its not exactly true. They however have designed alot of there own engines for ATV,bikes and scooters also on top of engines for the Japanese. See Lifan is 1 of about 3 major engine manufacters in Southeast Asia. Now there are other type of engines that have a belt drive inconjuction with a chained sprocket. These were a style engine that is found in alot of street cruiser bikes. Since most Asian countries only allow up to about 250cc engines in bikes on there streets. They have manufactured 200cc-250cc ect engines with belt drives to chain sprockets. These are OK for street bikes. I have seen these types of engines showing up in several types of ATV's. These types of Automatic transmissions cannot take a beating. These types of transmissions can only be used in automatic form. If the are used for instance with a 4 speed manual clutch, the belt breaks all the time. The belts tend to get hot from high and low speed interchanging we do ATV'ing. They also don't hold upwell climbing hills. Now if you are just going to putt around on somwhat level ground(say your older wife) then these automatics will stand up. You just can't haul ass of give them the gas. The other type of engine is your horizontal engines. These were comonly see in old Honda 50's and trail 90's from the 60's and 70's, they came with a 3 speed step through shifter with a automatic clutch gear box with direct chain drive( no belts involved). These setups are ok if you are just going to ride like I ride. Very easy and slow, shifting carefully and not giving it alot of gas. What China has done is take the 50cc and 90cc honda engine that is no longer in patent, bought the patent and are now using them in youth ATV's. The 125cc horizontal engine is the same engine just designed bigger by the Chinese engine manufactures. 50 and 90cc engines is the biggest I would go with a 3 speed step though. 50cc threw 125cc is the largest engine I would trust a automatic transmission. Anything above 125cc I would go with a gear box with a manual clutch chain driven ( no belt drive). Belt drive is only good for up to 125cc if that. Remember that all ATV,bike and scooter parts are made in Southeast Asia. Name brand usually, that is usually, uses only the highest quality of parts from all the different lines available. Chinese Machines are made of whatever parts are available at the time of assembly, that are in the most abundance. So you might have an assembly like I got on my SUNL ATV. I got pretty much high quality parts and frame tube except I found my ATV's have lower grade wiring harness but its been working fine,Shocks were middle of the road, headlights were only 18 watt, the related switches ect were of lower grade. But thats why they are less expensive then name brand. But they are all made from the same 3 or so factories you see in a generic way.So when you see that nice FOX shock look at its specs and compare specs not the name.
