When a starter goes bad it can either be quite or make all sorts of noise. From load grinding to just spinning. The starter on a 200cc engine is very simple. First there is one for the standard air cooled engine, and one for the watercooled engine. Both have 11 teeth in the starter gear ( Armeture ). If you visit Motopartsmax.com they have discriptions for both starters. First thing is to disconnect both battery terminals from the battery. Next remove the power lead to the starter it will most likely have a boot on it. Next disconnect the main grounds from the starter mounting bolts. Make sure you keep all the ground wires together so you don't forget to hook one up.Donot take the phillips screws out of the starter casing to remove the starter. A little wiggling and you will be able to get it past the other things and out of the machine. Now before you just buy a new starter, take it down to an auto electric place or auto parts store and have THEM bench test it. Take it to a few places as to make sure your not being lied to whether its good or bad. Alot of times it may still be good, but just needs to be cleaned up a bit. To clean a starter you remove the phillips screws and slowly pull the armature out. Make sure you will be able to put it back in the way it came out. Spray the armature and other related areas with electricial cleaner ( ONLY ). And put it back together exactly as it slid out. Let it dry a few minites. Bench test again. My starters armature was shorting out,so I bought a new one from Motopartsmax.com for about $50 after shipping cost. When reassembling the starter back in place, clean all your contact hardware with a small wire brush or something. Besure to use a corrosive resistor cream or like I used a red batery terminal spray! The number one thing you must do when replacing a starter is count the gear spikes. Mine was an 11 spoke starter!
