Just fixed up a meerkat, I got it to start and stay running, the problem is that when i have it in neutral and rev it up a bit for whatever reason it goes into gear without me touching the gear lever.

Try adjusting the shift lever or foot lever a "tooth" or two either way and re-tighten hand / foot shifter, then go through all the gears a couple of times, shut off and try again.
