Hi Guys,
Did you know you are supposed to grease a winch cable? I didn't until yesterday. I was out working on my new ATV, just fixing some little things. When a friend of mine Darren stopped by. He jumped my case because I had not greased the winch cable. He started going on and on about how if its not greased it would break after using it a few times. Well to tell the truth I didn't believe him, I didn't think it was a big deal. But I did look in the book that came with the winch and lo and behold there it was make sure to run all the cable out and coat it in grease. Darren use to run a tow truck thats how he knew. He got to telling me about the friction on a winch cable and not greasing it. Well the short of the story was that his old boss had just bought a new 3/8 aircraft grade cable for one of the trucks and had to use it before he got to grease it. He had to flip a truck back onto its wheels, took 3 pulls on the third pull the new cable broke. So now my new winch cable is well greased. We looked around the shop looking for the best grease to use and settled on marine wheel bearing grease. Why you ask? Because its water resistant, anti corrosive, and more important its green.. More camo. I would not have greased it if Darren hadn't kept on about it, nor would I have ever looked in the book most likely.
So if you own a winch you may want to grease the cable.
One thing that did surprise me is the fact that the cable on the ATV winch is fifty feet long.
Have a nice day
Larry
